Tweed Valley Relay For Life
7 March 2015 - 8 March 2015

Tweed Valley Relay For Life

The charity fundraiser is encouraging friends, family and work colleagues to get together and enter Relay For Life, a unique celebration of life and hope which unites communities to help make a difference to over 200 types of cancer.

Teams of people, of all ages, levels of fitness and from all walks of life are needed to take part at Tweed Valley Relay For Life over the weekend of 7th March 2015.

Teams are asked to raise as much money as possible in the months leading up to the Relay through a wide range of fundraising activities and securing donations from friends, families and work colleagues.

During the Relay itself, team members take it in turns to walk round a track while everyone else enjoys a wide range of fun activities, entertainment and food on offer. As Relay For Life is non-stop through the night, some teams look at it as a challenge and those members not on the track can take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in their tents which are set up close by. Other teams just come along to enjoy the fun and walk a few laps or one just to show their support and participate in a big day out.

As dusk falls, the atmosphere quietens as the Candle of Hope ceremony begins. The event is the most poignant part of Relay For Life when specially made Candle of Hope bags – decorated with touching messages in memory or in celebration of loved ones – are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the track at Merv Edwards Fields, Kingscliff.

ANZAC Day Gallipoli Re-Enactment
25 April 2015

ANZAC Day Gallipoli Re-Enactment

In the moments before the first rays of sunlight peek over the horizon on Anzac Day, Jack Evans Boat Harbour at Tweed Heads will become a giant outdoor stage for a dramatic re-enactment of the dawn landing by the Anzacs on the beach at Gallipoli.

Funded by an Australian Government Anzac Centenary Grant, Tweed Heads & Coolangatta RSL Sub-branch and Twin Towns Services Club, the re-enactment on Anzac Day, April 25, is expected to bring thousands of people to the boat harbour parklands behind Twin Towns to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

Tweed Heads & Coolangatta RSL Sub-branch secretary Dr John Griffin said the idea came to him after a visit to the Australian War Memorial in 2013, where one of the original landing boats was on display.

“It was like a big surfboat so I thought we have two surf lifesaving clubs, we have a cove and we have a strong sub-branch so why not work on a recreation of the landing?” Dr Griffin said. “More than a year of planning has already taken place, with the finishing touches now being added to the most ambitious and momentous endeavour ever undertaken by our organisation.

“The Gallipoli re-enactment will be a unique opportunity for people of all ages to step into the boots of our Diggers and relive those fateful moments of the dawn landing.

“Specialist consultants have been contracted to write the full musical backdrop and create a spectacular light and sound show to simulate the heavy fire from rifle and artillery faced by the diggers when they rowed into shore at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915.

Dr John Griffin.

“Throughout our planning stages, we have always maintained a strong focus on historical accuracy. We want our re-enactment to pull people back in time and give them some sense of what it felt like for our Aussie Diggers when they landed on that beach at Anzac Cove 100 years ago.”

Adding to its authenticity, the Gallipoli re-enactment will get under way about 4.30am, roughly the time when the first shots were fired. Two massive 6m-wide video screens will be positioned in the parklands to ensure all those attending have a good view of the proceedings. Four surf boats from the Coolangatta and Tweed Heads-Coolangatta surf clubs will carry 40 young rowers, dressed in authentic World War I uniforms and carrying armoury and backpacks from the era.

Dr Griffin said participation by the surf lifesavers added to the authenticity of the re-enactment as the soldiers who landed at Gallipoli would have been about the same age.

“When we approached the surf club to ask if they would like to be involved, we were overwhelmed by their response, everyone wanted to be a part of it,” he said.

The re-enactment will be followed by the Tweed Coolangatta RSL Sub-branch Dawn Service at 5am and the march later in the morning.

*Commencement time of re-enactment is yet to be confirmed.

Murwillumbah Business Chamber Networking Breakfast

Murwillumbah District Business Chamber (MDBC) is a voluntary partnership of business and professional people working together to build a prosperous future.

MDBC is a membership organisation for business in Murwillumbah and surrounding villages and you’re invited to attend our monthly breakfast meetings and connect with decision makers.

Monthly meetings are filled with great opportunities to hear informative speakers, keep up to date on local business information and most importantly have the chance to build relationships with business owners and operators.

People like to do business with people they know and trust, so bring along plenty of business cards and develop your professional relationships.
