Arts + Culture

The Northern Rivers region of NSW is known for having the most active and diverse regional arts community in Australia.

The Northern Rivers proudly boasts more artists per capital than any other region in Australia. Local Tweed artists are particularly inspired by their natural surroundings, recreating the rich tapestry of mountains, rainforests, oceans, rivers, birdlife and native animals using every medium imaginable. We are also fortunate to have exceptional representation from local indigenous artists whose artworks tell the Dreamtime stories of our land and its creation.

The Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre is arguably one of the best regional art galleries in Australia…

In early 2013 a sum of $1 million was bequeathed to the Tweed Regional Gallery by the Trustees of the Margaret Olley Art Trust to establish the Margaret Olley Art Centre (MOAC) as an extension to the gallery. The MOAC is a the purpose-built centre that honours the express wishes of the late Margaret Olley that her artist’s studio and elements of her home and collections be re-created in a suitable venue. The MOAC at the Tweed Regional Gallery is a repository of a large number of the artist’s own works, including works in progress, ephemera and correspondence, currently in the possession of the Margaret Olley Estate. The Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre is open Wednesday to Sunday – 10am to 5pm.

The Tweed’s stunning landscape and its local flora and fauna are the main attractions at the Caldera Art Gallery in Murwillumbah.  Local Artist Andy Reimanis, the founder of the Caldera Art Gallery, has provided a fantastic opportunity for Tweed-based artists to showcase their works in a fully commercial gallery. The artworks specifically focus on the natural environment and heritage values of the Australia’s Green Cauldron National Landscape. The star attraction is the 20m Green Cauldron Panorama which offers a 360 degree view of the ancient Tweed caldera from the summit of Wollumbin Mt Warning. The Caldera Art Gallery is located at the Murwillumbah Visitor Information Centre, open 7 days, free entry.

Museums

The Tweed’s colourful history is preserved by the Tweed Regional Museum, which presents a unique journey into the history, people and places of the majestic Tweed Valley. Branches of the museum at Tweed Heads, Murwillumbah and Uki are also home to local historical societies.

In August 2015, the Murwillumbah branch of the Museum re-opened after major redevelopment. The award winning multi-million dollar upgrade, which had been in progress since late 2011, treasures the old and embraces the new. The historic 1915 building has been restored to its former glory and now flows into a spacious and modern exhibition area, with vibrant displays bringing Tweed’s history to life through stories of our past.  The Murwillumbah branch is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 4pm.

Art & Craft Markets

Nowhere is the Tweed’s outstanding pool of artistic talent more evident than at art and craft markets held every weekend throughout the region. Browse the stalls, talk to artists and pick up a lasting, individual memory of your visit. View and download the local market guide.
